Top 10 'Only in Bend' Outdoor Experiences

There's a category of experience that belongs specifically to Bend. Not the kind of outdoor activity that's available anywhere in the West, but the particular combination of access, terrain, community, and culture that makes something feel unmistakably like this place. Here are ten of them.

1. Float the Deschutes through downtown

A river runs through the middle of the city. You can put in a tube at Riverbend Park and drift past the Old Mill District, through the Whitewater Park, and out at Drake Park in about two hours. Most cities would consider this an attraction. In Bend it's a Wednesday afternoon.

2. Ski in the morning, trail run in the afternoon

Mount Bachelor is 22 miles from downtown. On a good snow year, skiers are on the mountain by 9 AM and back on Bend's trail system by 2 PM. The vertical and the proximity make this a real thing that real people do on real Tuesdays.

3. Climb at Smith Rock before work

Smith Rock is 25 minutes from Bend, opens at sunrise, and on a cool September morning has some of the best sport climbing in the country. Before most offices have their second cup of coffee, there are people already off the wall and heading back to town. This is not a hypothetical.

4. Watch the larch trees turn gold in October

Larches are the only deciduous conifer in Central Oregon. In October they turn a brilliant yellow-gold that catches most people completely off guard the first time they see it. Drive up toward Mount Bachelor or hike Tumalo Mountain and the effect is genuinely stunning.

5. Drink world-class beer literally everywhere

Bend has more craft breweries per capita than almost any city in the country. Deschutes Brewery, 10 Barrel, Crux Fermentation Project, Boneyard, GoodLife, Ale Apothecary. The variety and quality are not accidental. Fresh hop season in September and October means the beer gets even more interesting.

6. Mountain bike from your neighborhood

Large sections of Bend's trail system connect directly to residential neighborhoods on the west side. Locals ride from their houses to singletrack without loading a bike on a car. The trail network is extensive enough that you can ride a different direction every day for weeks.

7. Watch the sunrise from Pilot Butte in the middle of the city

Pilot Butte is a volcanic cinder cone sitting in the middle of Bend with a trail to the top and a 360-degree view of the entire Cascade Range. On a clear morning, you can see nine volcanic peaks from the summit. It takes twenty minutes to climb. It is inside the city limits.

8. Attend the Pole Pedal Paddle in spring

A relay race that starts on Mount Bachelor and ends on the Deschutes River, passing through a Nordic ski segment, a bike leg, a run, and a paddle along the way. It's quintessentially Bend in that it combines multiple outdoor disciplines into one event and draws the whole community out to watch.

9. Drive the Cascade Lakes Highway in summer

A 66-mile loop through the Cascades that passes a dozen alpine lakes, Mount Bachelor, and views that look like they belong in a national park brochure. It's open from late spring through early fall, and driving it slowly with somewhere to swim along the way is one of the great free afternoons in Central Oregon.

10. Just live here in September

Summer crowds gone, trails empty, air clear, weather still warm and sunny most days, the farmers market still running, the mountains right there, and a town full of people who chose this place on purpose. September in Bend is the combination of everything that makes it worth it, and it's available to anyone who actually lives here. That last part is the only-in-Bend part.
