Buyer Tips
One of the best things about living here is how close the trailhead is. Here are the summer hikes we send people to first.
People move to Bend for a lot of reasons, but the one that shows up again and again is this: you can be standing at a trailhead twenty minutes after you lock your front door. It is not a marketing line, it is just Tuesday. If you are new to the area, visiting for the summer, or simply looking to fall back in love with your own backyard, here are the hikes we recommend first, all within about half an hour of town.
Right in town, the Deschutes River Trail is the one you can do before work, with a dog, or with visiting family who are not sure about elevation. Flat, shaded in stretches, and always near the water. It is the reason so many locals start their day outside without making a whole plan of it.
A cinder cone in the middle of the city with a trail that spirals to the top and a 360-degree view of the Cascades waiting for you. Short, steep enough to feel like something, and unbeatable at sunrise before the summer heat sets in. If you do one hike to understand the lay of the land, do this one.
A short drive from town delivers you to one of the most photographed spots in Central Oregon, an eighty-nine-foot waterfall you can see almost from the parking area, with trails continuing past a string of smaller falls if you want more. High reward for modest effort, which makes it perfect for a summer afternoon.
Head up the Cascade Lakes Highway and the whole alpine world opens up, with trailheads around Sparks Lake, Green Lakes, and beyond. These get you into the high country and the postcard scenery. Summer, once the snow clears, is the season for them, so it is the time to go.
Start early. Trailheads fill up and afternoons get hot; a sunrise start solves both.
Bring more water than you think, the high desert is drier than it feels.
Check trail and air-quality conditions before you go, especially later in the season.
Popular trailheads may require a Northwest Forest Pass or day permit, so check before you park.
This is the shortlist, not the whole list, which is sort of the point of living here: you never run out. If you are thinking about making Central Oregon home and want to know which neighborhoods put you closest to the trails you love, that is a conversation we genuinely enjoy having. Reach out anytime.
